Tindersticks
The Hungry Saw
Constellation; May 2008
The Tindersticks are probably best known for their musical contributions to the HBO hit series The Sopranos, and it’s for good reason. Their music conveys, even more than their contemporaries, a feeling of melodramatic sincerity. And with their new album, The Hungry Saw, the band prove their worth yet again. Typically melancholic, Saw is rather uplifting in a strange and darkly whimsical way. Tracks like “Yesterdays Tomorrows” and “Hungry Saw” feature a 1950s beatnik lounge-style rhythm section, layered with both tambourine beats and flute. Meanwhile, other tracks rely heavily on the strings and lush orchestral sounds the band is perhaps best known for-namely on “Other Side of the World” and “Turns We Took.”
