The Teamsters Union has filed a grievance with the National Labor Relations Board charging that the Santa Barbara News-Press terminated sports writer Dennis Moran this past weekend because he belongs to the union’s bargaining team. The News-Press cited Moran’s failure to cover a charity golf tournament. The News-Press filed grievances claiming Teamsters have “illegally” urged customers not to patronize businesses that advertise in the News-Press. Teamster representatives deny the claim. The Santa Barbara News-Press agreed on 8/27 to pay $140,000 for improperly forfeited comp-time and vacation days. The lion’s share goes to the two former newsroom employees who initiated the action, Hildy Medina and Anna Davison. Because accurate records don’t exist, plaintiffs’ attorney Bruce Anticouni said that 540 current and former employees are eligible to file claims based on their length of employment.
