UCSB scientists reacted favorably to President Barack Obama’s 3/9 lift of the ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. According to UCSB, the university is in a unique position to carry out such investigative work thanks to $8 million in grants from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine and a nearly completed Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering. Rep. Lois Capps was among the approximately 150 participants to gather at the White House Health Summit on 3/5 to discuss overhauling the national healthcare system. During the wrap-up session following the summit, Capps directly addressed President Obama about the importance of tackling the national shortage of nurses. Obama agreed with Capps, saying increased funding for training nurses “should be a bipartisan no-brainer.” (/capps312)
