Engineer John Schoof, regarded as a rising star throughout Santa Barbara City Hall, died last week of sudden heart failure as part of his ongoing battle with diabetes. Schoof, 48, ran the city’s wastewater system and had helped rebuild the city’s treatment plant. At the time of his death, Schoof was tracking down how human feces was getting into city creeks via guerilla sewage mains and cracked lines, among other things.
