A Closer Look at Whodidily
Montecito Cupcake Shop Featured on Food Network
The scent of Whodidily Cupcakes is not the only sweet thing to be encountered upon entering. From the heartfelt smiles behind the counter to the mouth-watering explanations of cupcake flavors to each new guest, Whodidily is strikingly different from most establishments. Owners Wendy and Dave Jones, who attend Reality Carpinteria church meetings each Sunday, put great emphasis on the service they provide. The success of the cupcake shop, which is located in Montecito, is not something they feel they’ve earned so much as they feel it is a product of their faith and trust. The Joneses are committed to quality and freshness in their cupcakes, donating leftovers from each day, and never, they said, sacrificing quality for profit.
Recently, their mom-and-pop shop was chosen by the Food Network for a spot on a new show called Cupcake Wars. The Joneses were thrilled when they received the call from Food Network asking them to join the show. Scheduled to air at the beginning of December, pits cupcake bakery owners against one another in a bake-off of sorts. Wendy, still glowing from the excitement of the experience, explained that as the only married couple in the competition they felt a little intimidated at first, but remained confident in their abilities and each other. As it turned out, the competition went well, and though they are unable to disclose any results, Wendy and Dave were proud of their work and their behavior, and are looking forward excitedly to the airing of the show.
The couple, proud parents of three young girls, have broken molds and expectations, even their own, left and right with their cupcake shop. From celebrity clientele to calls from the Food Network, the success of Whodidily is undeniable. Wendy says that the pressure to expand is significant, but they want to be careful, comparing their situation to that of In-n-Out who took three years to open their second establishment and still have not franchised. Wendy says that in order to maintain the quality of the service, as well as the quality of the cupcakes themselves, Whodidily will take its time spreading to new locations.
Sitting in Whodidily Cupcakes the day after the filming of the show began at UCLA, Wendy explained that she and Dave-affectionately referred to by their customers as Mr. and Mrs. Whodidily-had returned from the filming for the day based solely on a promise made to customers to be open that Friday. “We thought it was just a cupcake shop, but now it’s all about relationships,” she explained. Check out the Whodidily website or pop over to the shop for a delightful experience, and keep your eyes peeled for Wendy and Dave on the Food Network this fall.
