Plans to consolidate the Santa Barbara Cancer Center’s three locations into one building was given a “community priority” designation by the City Council 12/8. The new center is to be located at the Cancer Center’s current main office at 540 West Pueblo Street. The new center, encompassing 10 separate lots and 3.5 acres, would provide six rental units for Cancer Center employees as well as a three-level parking garage. The center secured the land three years ago, and administrators estimate the new digs will cost $45 million to build, for which they’re preparing a capital campaign.

David Lack’s plan to build an environmentally friendly, mixed-use structure on Bradbury Avenue got sent back to the city’s Architectural Board of Review on 12/8. Lack had taken his case to the City Council in hopes that it would reverse a rejection previously made by the Planning Commission in September. The council unanimously agreed the project was too big for the surrounding neighborhood and its architectural design was too contemporary. Council members voiced support for Lack’s basic idea, but only if he trims at least 500 square feet off the 5,500-square-foot proposal.
