THE ARTS
80th Annual Children’s Fiesta Parade
Participate in this S.B. tradition and make memories for your family. On Sat., Aug. 7, young people of Santa Barbara, along with their parents and other parade participants, will don traditional costumes and parade down State Street for the eighth decade in a row. Applications to enroll in this year’s event will be available starting Mon., May 10; deadline to submit an application this year is Fri., July 9.

Animation and Video Film Camp for Youth
The S.B. African Heritage Film Series and Freshi Film Camp present a week-long immersion in digital filmmaking. Highly skilled professionals from every field of filmmaking teach young filmmakers the latest techniques and technologies available, and campers make their own films.

Art by the Sea Summer camp
Carpinteria Valley Arts Center presents Art by the Sea Summer Camp, a fine-art summer camp for children. Art by the Sea Summer Camp gives children a chance to draw, paint, and make art inspired by the ocean. Children will participate in weekly field trips to the beach, sketching sessions in the Arts Council’s gallery, talks by working artists, and more. A mini art exhibition at the end of each week will showcase the children’s many projects. All classes will be taught by experienced art teachers Jenn Buur and Maureen Foley in downtown Carpinteria. Art From Scrap: Green Kids Summer Day Camp

Destination Dance
Presented by S.B. Dance Arts under the direction of Alana Tillim and Steven Lovelace. Learn the latest moves and proper technique from Destination Dance’s amazing staff comprised of Broadway veterans and internationally trained professionals. Age-level appropriate classes for beginning- and advanced-level dances that all work toward weekly performances. Daily classes include jazz and hip-hop, plus each week brings a different blend of styles: tumbling, break dancing, Pilates, ballet, lyrical, and more. Encounter
Encounter is an original stage production engaging young people in the process of creating theatre magic, by a talented team of artists with over 75 years of combined professional theatre, movement and music experience. Peter McCorkle and Matt Tavianini will co-direct this cutting-edge, multimedia production at the Marjorie Luke Theatre. Fairy Tale Dreams Camp
S.B. Ballet Center’s summer camp is geared for dancers with ability levels from beginning through advanced, designed for students interested in performances. The focus will be preparation and performance of a one-act ballet based on traditional fairy tales. All campers will be cast and celebrated in a showcase performance on July 9 at Center Stage Theater.

Gustafson Dance Camps
Gustafson Dance offers three summer programs for all age groups, complete with a variety of dance forms, art, and more. Both the full-day Dance Camp (ages 6-12) and half-day Mini-Dance Camp (4-8) programs culminate in a fully staged musical performance at the Marjorie Luke. The Junior Intensive is a serious ballet program, including jazz, pointe, character, and variations, culminating in a performance at the Marjorie Luke.

Jensen’s Summer GuitarRock Camp
Jensen’s RockCamp is a full-day, week-long music camp that teaches kids the basics of playing the electric guitar. Your child will have fun learning to play music and get a free electric guitar. All sessions end with a MainStage performance for parents and friends. Journalism Skills Camp
Do your kids love technology but you want them to learn something worthwhile while online? At Education Gateway’s Journalism Camp, students explore the field of journalism while learning how to use applicable technology. Campers improve their writing skills with daily projects, learn photojournalism with photo assignments and the use of programs like Photoshop Elements ,iPhoto, and other Mac-based iLife programs. By the end of the camp, students will have created their own interactive online blog with articles and photography.

KidzArt Summer Camps

Montecito School of Ballet Summer Fiesta Intensive

S.B. Channels Video Camp 2010
Learn how to produce for television and the Internet! In Session 1 (Field Production), Video Camp students will learn how to use video equipment, shot composition, lighting, pre-production, and be introduced to the post-production process. Session 2 students will learn studio production at S.B. Channels’ state-of-the-art studios, with a focus on screen technology, cameras, lighting, set design, and audio. Stage Left Productions Performing Arts Camps
Intensive training for young performing artists taught by Shana Lynch Arthurs and Steven Lovelace, with a focus on audition technique, physical comedy, characterization, vocal technique, dance, and set and costume design/construction. Students interested in the technical aspects of stage productions will not only participate in camp activities, but also learn about technical elements like lights, sound, and backstage training. Summer Stock Youth Theater Camps for Kids and Teens
S.B. Summer Stock produces wildly creative showcases in theater, music, and dance. The program features Technique Training in stage acting, dance, and voice. Campers participate in a four-week session culminating in live performances at Center Stage Theater.

Youth Acting Program
Led by experienced instructor Brendan Fleming, students learn vocal range, proper breathing technique, characterization, and how to use their voice and body as an instrument. Stage direction, etiquette, and professionalism are also taught. Students role-play, improvise, and learn mime through theater games and activities. No memorization required. Class size of 10 or fewer participants provides personalized attention.

Young Singers’ Club Performing Arts Camps
Mamma Mia, Annie, Wicked, Taylor Swift, The Beatles, and more … a different theme each week! Camp Wheez
Staffed by health-care professionals and knowledgeable volunteers from the community, Camp Wheez is a summer day program for elementary school-aged children with chronic asthma, providing them a camp experience designed for their special needs. Under the direction of Dr. Myron Lieberhaber and sponsored by local health-care group Sansum Clinic, Camp Wheez provides asthma education and physical development skills to its campers, as well engaging them in activities like arts and crafts projects, and more good old-fashioned camp fun. On the last day of camp, parents are invited to a brief workshop for an update on asthma care and a Q&A session with medical staff, followed by a play presented by their campers.

Doggone Fun Camp
Participants will learn obedience training with their canine, exercise with their dog, learn about dog health, and responsible pet ownership. Junior Tennis Clinic at Cathedral Oaks

S.B. Sailing Center Kids’ Sail and Kayak Camps
The S.B. Sailing Ctr.’s 24 years of youth summer camps have taught more than 9,000 kids how to sail and kayak. The camps provide quality on-the-water instruction, with an instructor-to-camper ratio of no more than 1:5. During a one-week Sailing Camp session, your child will learn basic sailing techniques, nautical terminology, crew overboard rescue maneuvers, basic knots, and “rules of the road” while having a fun, exciting time. Kayak Camp will show your child the joys of kayaking safely within S.B.’s protected harbor, all while gaining skills such as safe kayak mounting and dismounting techniques, basic paddling skills, how to be a courteous kayaker, and how to safely maneuver a kayak in a variety of different situations.

This leadership training program gives would-be counselors training in how to work with others, supervise children, interview, fundraise, resolve conflicts, be a good role model, and teach a variety of indoor and outdoor activities for children ages 4-11 CITs will be in a safe and structured environment, and if accepted, will be eligible to be certified in CPR and first aid, and possibly put their skills to the test as a CIT at the Sequoia Resident Camp in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The Write Foot
The Write Foot summer experience incorporates an interactive, structured approach to prepare recent high school graduates and seniors to be immediately proficient in college composition. By utilizing community resources, authentic writing tasks, and writer’s workshop principles, students will expand their ability to engage in critical thinking, expository writing, and academic discourse. The flexible curriculum reflects the instructor’s experience in education from elementary through university levels.

Writing the College Essay and Interviewing to Succeed for Teens
Every high school senior needs to submit a top-notch essay to gain admittance to college. Join Matt Struckmeyer, Dunn assistant college counselor and English department chair, in a 15-hour workshop where teens will choose from among all their life experiences a moment that shows how they think and feel, what they believe in and are capable of, while learning how to make specific, personal experiences resonate with a broad audience.
