Congressmember Elton Gallegly, expressed disappointment at the recent Supreme Court ruling—Stevens v. the United States—that free speech trumps animal rights. Gallegly had authored a bill in 1999 outlawing the interstate sale of animal snuff movies. The Stevens case involved a man charged with violating that law by selling videos showing animals being crushed to death. By a vote of 8-1, the Supreme Court ruled that law was unconstitutional. Gallegly noted that many mass murderers had evidenced an appetite for animal cruelty before embarking on their killing sprees, and said he planned to reintroduce a new bill that would address the court’s constitutional concerns.
