The Cotton Fire, which has grown to 2,044 acres since igniting on 5/9 northeast of Santa Maria and five miles west of New Cuyama along Highway 166, is nearly contained. The fire, which never threatened any structures, grew quickly as high winds pushed it through tall grass and brush. As of Tuesday, 320 fire personnel were fighting the blaze, while law enforcement officers are investigating the cause.
