• The Channel Islands Restoration and South Coast Habitat Restoration groups are looking for volunteers to help remove the nonnative invasive ice plant at Carpinteria State Beach (5361 6th St., Carpinteria) this Saturday, August 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers can stay to help for just a few hours, and will receive a free parking pass to enjoy the beach that afternoon. • The Professional Women’s Association and the Associated Students Community Affairs Board at UCSB are hosting their 16th Annual Backpack Drive this month. Donations of backpacks, three-ring binders, pencils, paper, calculators, and other school supplies will be given to elementary school-aged children in the S.B. community. Items can be dropped off at the UCSB UCen, Visitor’s Center (Student Affairs Admin. Svcs. Bldg., Rm. 1102), Housing Office (Bldg. 549), and the Student Resource Building from now until Tuesday, August 31. Call 893-2775 for more info.
