The Goleta City Council voted to approve a resolution in support of Proposition 22, the Local Taxpayer Public Safety and Transportation Protection Act of 2010. The measure is aimed at closing loopholes which allow the state to divert, borrow and take local redevelopment, transportation and other critical funding sources.

Proposition 22 will stop the raids by the State and ensure local control over property and gas taxes which provide essential services to the community. It will protect existing funding sources dedicated to public safety, transportation, public improvements and community services. Goleta uses these funds for police deputies, library services, street sweeping and park maintenance, among other services.

“Protection of local revenues is essential to allowing local government to do its job. If the State has a way to take local funding, it appears they will! Yes on Prop 22 will protect local services required to maintain our quality of life.” said Mayor Eric Onnen.

With the passage of the resolution, the City of Goleta will now appear in the California Voter Guide for the November 2nd General Election as a supporter of Proposition 22.
