Christine F. Andersen Named At-Large Director of ASCE

American Society of Civil Engineers Appoints Santa Barbara Public Works Director to Post

Christine F. Andersen P.E., director of public works for the City of Santa Barbara, was recently elected as an at-large director of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Andersen, was installed on October 20, 2010 during the business meeting at ASCE’s Annual Civil Engineering Conference in Las Vegas.

Prior to her current position, Andersen was the director of public works for the City of Long Beach, Calif., where she managed the administration, planning facilities, airport, engineering and street maintenance, environmental services, fleet services, and traffic and transportation bureaus.

Andersen has also served as deputy city manager of the City of Boulder, Colo., where she provided support to the mayor and eight City Council members, and director of public works for the City of Eugene, Oregon, where she managed seven of the city’s public works divisions, including engineering design and construction management, and the metropolitan wastewater treatment plant operation.

For the past twenty years, Andersen has served ASCE as a public agency peer reviewer. In 2006, she joined the Action Planning Task Committee which was formed after the 2005 devastation in New Orleans. Post-Hurricane Katrina, she also served on ASCE’s External Review Panel, a group which was tasked with reviewing the work of the United States Army Corps of Engineers’ Interagency Performance Evaluation Task Force in their evaluation of the New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana hurricane protection system after Hurricane Katrina.

Andersen received her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois. She also attended the University of Vermont for post graduate study courses in civil engineering.
