The reason: dead or missing batteries.Recently, a fire occurred in Santa Barbara County in which a home had smoke detectors, however they were non operational. Tragedies can be avoided with properly installed and maintained smoke detectors. The Santa Barbara County Fire Department reminds people to test your smoke detectors a least once per month and replace the batteries at least twice per year.
