For the eighth year, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper has sponsored a juried student art contest on the theme “What the Channel Means to Me.”

The show of 60+ pieces, chosen from nearly two hundred submitted, will be on public display with a student show and reception at the Kim Kieler Gallery at 1 N Calle Cesar Chavez #5 in Santa Barbara on Sunday, March 6th from 2-4 pm. The goal of the show, which is open to high school students from Carpinteria to Goleta, is to inspire local youth to create art that celebrates the natural beauty and diversity of the Santa Barbara Channel, and for their art to inspire others in our community.

The show was juried by local artist Pamela Larson and Judy Larson, Director of the Westmont Museum of Art who selected first, second and third place winners, two jurors’ choice awards, an Honorable Mention and an Environmental Ethic Award.

Students were judged on their creativity, technical skill, sense of style and interpretation of the theme. Winners, to be announced at the Kim Kieler Gallery at 3 pm on Sunday by Assemblymember Das Williams, will receive generous prizes donated by show sponsor Trillium Enterprises, Inc.

Participating schools included Dos Pueblos, San Marcos and Santa Barbara High Schools.

After the show on Sunday March 6th, the art will be on display at the Kim Kieler Gallery for two weeks. The winning works of art will be invited for a grand finale exhibition at Channelkeeper’s annual fundraising gala, the Blue Water Ball, to be held on March 19, 2011 at the Rockwood Women’s Club in Santa Barbara.
