Like so many of their Portland-dwelling colleagues, AgesandAges’ music is marked by folkie structures, big group vocals, and lots of jangly percussion. Yet this seven-piece collective functions—and sounds—like something unarguably unique. On Alright You Restless (out now on Knitting Factory Records), the group channels an energy and vibe that’s part church-born hymnal, part soulful Southern twang, and part smart, Beatlesesque pop rock. While twinkling pianos (“Tap on Your Windowpane”), hand claps (“No Nostalgia”), and guitar taps (“So So Freely”) color the record, it’s harmony and lyrics that ultimately set Restless apart. Case in point: late-album standout “When I Was Idle,” which blooms from a capella choral number to full-blown communal rock-out in under four minutes.
