In recognition of being named the national winner in the community college category for the Association of College and Research Library’s (ACRL) 2011 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award competition, Santa Barbara City College’s Luria Library will host a special ceremony and reception titled “Explore, Learn, Grow and Celebrate!” on Thursday, April 14. The event, which is open to the community, will be held at the library patio with the award ceremony from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. A reception, tours and demonstration will follow.

Library Director Kenley Neufeld will accept the national award from Lisa Hinchliffe, President of the Association of College and Research Libraries. The ACRL selection committee cited the Luria Library’s commitment to student learning and library outreach to the community in its decision-making process. Under the guidance of Mr. Neufeld, with support from the college administration, faculty, staff and donors, the Luria Library, has substantially expanded its services and offerings to SBCC faculty, staff, and thousands of students every semester.

“This national award recognizes the accomplishments of librarians and other library staff as they come together as members as of a team to support the mission of the college,” said Mr. Neufeld.

Following the award ceremony, the library will host a special library-theme dessert reception prepared by the SBCC Culinary Arts and Catering staff. Tours will be offered and all students who attend will receive tickets for special raffle prizes as a thank you for support of the library.

Special guests include representatives from the offices of Congresswoman Lois Capps and Assembly Member Das Williams and librarians from the Santa Barbara Public Library, UCSB, and Westmont College.

Also attending the ceremony will be Kandy Luria-Budgor, president of the Friends of the Luria Library, a community group which supports library services not funded by the state. These include providing student textbook grants, and bolstering the special, reference and periodicals collections.

SBCC Superintendent/President Dr. Andreea Serban said, “This award is well-deserved by our library staff. We are particularly thankful to the Luria family, the Friends of the Luria Library and other donors whose contributions allow us to provide services which are not supported by state funding and which greatly contribute to the excellence of our college.”
