The City of Goleta, community groups, students and parents celebrated the new signal at the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Berkeley Road.
Mayor Margaret Connell said, “We are very excited to be celebrating the completion of this traffic signal. With the library and several schools nearby, and as part of the Goleta north bike route, we are glad to make this a safer place for all.”
The City has wanted to install a signal at this intersection for quite some time but funding constraints made it impossible. It was through the tenacity of City staff that a grant from the State and Local Partnership Program was applied for and received. This grant covered half of the cost of the installation.
Steve Wagner, Director of Community Services for the City of Goleta, said, “We would not be standing here today without the perseverance of Rosemarie Gaglione, Capital Improvement Project Manager for the City. Not only did sheoversee this project, she refused to give up on finding money to help fund this it.”
Cyclists and students were also on hand to thank the City for this addition.Wilson Hubbell from the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition added, “I’ve waited 25 years for this to happen and I was so pleased to ride up today to this signal. Thank you City of Goleta for making this happen.” Attendees participated in a walk across the intersection to commemorate this exciting day.
