Sycamore Canyon Trail

On Friday, April 22, a group of people assembled on Sycamore Canyon Rd. in front of Cold Spring School in Montecito. Among those present were 1st District Supervisor Carbajal, Superintendent Bryan McCabe, Wildland Fire Officer Curtis Vincent, Executive Director of Lotusland Gwen Stauffer, Santa Barbara Beautiful President Ginny Brush, COAST Board member Eva Inbar, Das Williams representative Darcel Elliott, and Safe Routes to School parent representatives. Balloons and a banner underscored the occasion: Cold Spring School was celebrating its 1+ year old trail and landscape project along the frontage of the school on Sycamore Canyon Road. Made possible by a grant from Santa Barbara Beautiful and a group volunteer effort, the trail provides safe walking space where there once was none.

The landscape is a combination of Santa Barbara Daisy and Trailing Rosemary, suggested by Lotusland curator Virginia Hayes and landscape architect Susan Van Atta , satisfying a Caltrans requirement that the plants be no more than 12” tall and have no sharp leaves. This trail is a model for the Montecito Walk to School Trail Project, inspiring homeowners to clear trail space along their roadside landscape.
