The Dog Adoption & Welfare Group (DAWG), a nonprofit no-kill dog rescue located in Santa Barbara California, rescued twelve German Shepherd puppies, 10 weeks old, and their mother on May 19.

With no room at Santa Barbara County Animal Services, Services staff appealed to the only no-kill dog shelter in Santa Barbara to accept the family of canines. Suffering from a variety of health issues, the dogs were discovered in a field in a rural area of Santa Maria along with their mother. DAWG is able to treat them for their health issues through their onsite veterinary clinic. Unless the dogs found a home with DAWG, the entire family may not have survived.

All of the dogs are undergoing treatment for a non-contagious mange, being de-wormed, and starting their vaccination series; the dogs will be spayed or neutered before adoption. At DAWG, they will receive a healthy diet and plenty of attention. Each one is yearning for a happy home and DAWG staff expects mom and her puppies will be adoptable in a few weeks.

“We are so happy to have had the space and resources to help some of the most adorable puppies you have ever seen. Twelve puppies is a large litter even for a German Shepherd. Mamma Maria was one very resourceful mother to keep her whole family alive. The family has 2 males and 10 females- we are affectionately calling them the ‘Von Trapp Family Dogs’” said Tiffani Hill, Shelter Director. DAWG is seeking sponsors to help cover the cost of the care of this canine family- information can be obtained by emailing sponsor@sbdawg.org.
