DNA evidence recently linked 32-year-old Jose Antonio Aviles to an April 2010 robbery at Joyeria Latina Americana jewelry store on North Milpas Street. During the heist, four men brandishing handguns stole approximately $750,000 in jewelry and $13,000 in cash. SBPD detectives collected DNA evidence at the scene that they sent to the California Department of Justice for examination. After a match came back to Aviles, the detectives reviewed surveillance footage of the robbery and determined he was involved. They arrested Aviles in San Diego on charges of robbery and kidnapping. The other three men remain at large.
