UCSB professor Frank J. Doyle III has netted himself the coveted Innovator of the Year Award from the Santa Barbara Region Chamber of Commerce for his contribution to the artificial pancreas system that is currently undergoing clinical trials around the world. A chemical as well as computer and electrical engineering professor, Doyle wrote biofeedback-response software that allows an artificial pancreas to communicate with the human body to treat type 1 diabetes patients. His computer modeling has also shed light on circadian rhythms, drug delivery systems, Alzheimer’s disease, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The award will be presented at a ceremony on January 20.
