Catholic Schools are justifiably proud of the strong sense of community that they foster on their campuses, and today’s gathering at Bishop Diego High School took it to the next level. Approximately 1000 faculty, parents and kindergarten through 12th grade students gathered in the gym at Bishop Diego to celebrate Catholic Schools Week 2012. Catholic Schools Week is a national event with this year’s theme being Faith, Academics and Service. Bishop Thomas Curry presided over the Mass with concelebrants from the local parishes. The Mass included the blessing of written reflections from students as to what it means to be part of a Catholic school.

Kids of all ages played a huge role in planning for and the execution of this huge gathering. Members of the Bishop Campus Ministry team sang and acted as ushers, students from various grade levels did readings and each student in attendance demonstrated their growing commitment to serving their community by bringing a non-perishable food item that will be donated to the Catholic Charities Food Bank. The celebration concluded with a video produced by Bishop students’ Tom Aijian and Daniel De la Mora conducting interviews at all the local Catholic schools. One student wrote “I love going to a Catholic school because it really lets me be me and figure out who I am.” Another simply said “attending a Catholic school has given me a family.”

Bishop’s Head of School, Dr. Paul Harrington, was pleased with the events of the day. “It was really inspiring to see all the schools join together in fellowship,” he said. He went on to say that the setting was especially appropriate given the history of the Bishop gym. “That basketball court is usually the place where athletic rivalries between the local schools are played out. This this was a good reminder to the kids that they are a community of faith and that they share more values than not.”

Bishop Diego is a Catholic, co-educational high school that welcomes students of all faiths.
