State Trails Day Encourages Volunteer Upkeep
County Agencies, Organizations Call for Residents to Help Maintain Hiking Paths
For all you Santa Barbara hikers, mountain bikers, and wilderness lovers, an opportunity to enjoy the sunny outdoors and hit the trails awaits on the horizon. This Saturday, April 14, is State Trails Day, an annual event in which area agencies, organizations, and volunteers come together to prune flora growing alongside worn-down dirt paths, which will also be smoothed out.
Planning ahead is a good idea: The group heading out to San Antonio Creek Trail (which begins at the far end of Tucker’s Grove and runs about two miles in length) leaves at 9 a.m. and returns at 2 p.m. If you’d prefer hiking and working on Midland Ranch Trail (which lies at the base of Figueroa Mountain Road), rest plenty because this group departs at 8:30 a.m. and circles back at 4 p.m.
Venturing out means bringing the necessary gear — nobody wants to go home itching of poison oak. So, everyone participating is recommended to bring long pants and sturdy ankle-height shoes, along with water, sunscreen, and a hat. Volunteers will be using tools, which, along with gloves and helmets, will be provided on-site.
