Santa Barbara Police Testing Segways

Select Santa Barbara police will tool around town on Segways for the next seven weeks as part of a pilot program to see if the electric personal transports might be a good fit for officers on patrol. Two models — provided by Segway of Santa Barbara — will be tested, including one with off-road capability. Both have a top speed of 12.5 mph and an effective range of 17 miles. At the end of each run, officers will fill out a written evaluation of their experience.
