The hiker who died on the Jesusita Trail on Monday has been identified by authorities as 48-year-old Christopher Martin, a resident of Palos Verdes.

Martin was in Santa Barbara with his wife, who was with him on the hike, to stay at UCSB’s Family Vacation Center in the San Rafael residence hall. The all-inclusive program is put on by the university, said UCSB spokesperson George Foulsham, who said that neither Martin nor his wife are UCSB alumni.

The hike was part of the camp that Martin and his wife were participating in, Foulsham said, adding that the university provided the family with grief counseling, helped pack up Martin’s belongings, and transported the family where they needed to go.

The cause of Martin’s death has yet to be determined.
