Most of the newspaper film critics have ignored this smart, polished and glitzy documentary film that doesn’t really feel like one. And most of the broadcast media, with the exception of Fox News, has looked the other way instead of offering Dinesh D’Souza some airtime to explain his “take” on the legend and myth of Barack Obama, hoping his movie will fade away into the morning mist.

But that’s not what’s happening. All kinds of people are attending the screenings of this extraordinary film and making up their own minds, based mostly on word of mouth. It’s one thing if only members of the “right-wing choir” are paying $7 to $10 to see this 99 minute movie, but independents, fence-sitters and 2008 Obama-voters suffering from buyer’s remorse are clamoring to see what all the excitement is about.

Team Obama no longer can stand by and allow a mixed-race naturalized American born and raised in Mumbai, India vet and define Barack Hussein Obama (a.k.a. Barry Soertoro) for the American voters without some input and criticism in return. Of course, though, the risk and danger for the Obama campaign is that it’s a losing proposition all around once they begin giving “2016: Obama’s America” free publicity. It’s already playing in over 2,000 theaters and it’s already slated to repeat in more than 2,000 theaters this weekend through next Thursday.

Once the president acknowledges that this film has crawled under his skin, the type of persons wanting to see this movie is going to radically change and it could go “viral” in a hurry. Right now, the broadcast networks are sitting on the sidelines with regards to D’Souza’s proposal to air it on TV before the election. But profit almost always trumps ideology in the boardrooms of network television and nobody wants to be left holding the bag when there’s money to be made. It’s possible that more voters in one night on television could see this film than in theaters since August.

“2016: Obama’s America” is a game-changer of enormous proportions. Nobody on the Democrat or Republican side has control over the message oozing from this medium. It’s becoming apparent that Mitt Romney by himself will not define his opponent in the stark terms that are required to defeat him in November. He will need the assistance of “2016: Obama’s America”. The film makes sense of Barack Obama’s first 44 months in office by defining him and letting everyone know where he’s from – not geographically necessarily, but culturally and ideologically. The Republican campaign needs to put flesh on this murky outline of who Obama is. Otherwise, much of what Obama has projected onto the American body politic doesn’t make sense.

The most intriguing aspect of this sudden movie event thrust into the main aisle of this political campaign is that Dinesh D’Souza and Barry Soertoro (a.k.a. Barack Obama) are very similar fellows with a great deal in common. Both are mixed race sons, although Dinesh did not say what his mixture is. Both were born in 1961 – Barack in Honolulu, HI and Dinesh in Mumbai, India. Both had family members who by experience and ideology came to adopt anti-colonialist, anti-Western stances in the worldview they imparted to Barack Obama and Dinesh D’Souza growing up. Both never entered the American continent (the “lower 48”) until they entered college at the age of 18. Obama spent four years at Occidental College in Los Angeles and Columbia University in New York City, while D’Souza took up residence in Hanover, NH at Dartmouth College for four years. They both graduated from an Ivy League school in 1982. Barack went on to Harvard Law School; Dinesh found his way to think tanks and publications in Washington, D.C.

What’s more striking is that one was legally born in the United States but adopted a nasty strain of anti-Americanism by the time he entered Harvard. The other, who really was born and raised in a Third World, anti-colonial environment, shook off the shackles of this envy and hatred for a system and culture that subjugated his Indian brethren for a couple hundred years and joyfully cobbled together a Westernized worldview on his own (apart from his extended family) that includes liberty, democracy, Christianity and free-market capitalism.

Could you find a greater contrast between two men who were born 10,000 miles apart but under the same influences, and developed in ideologically-opposite directions?

Oh, did I say they both got married at the age of 30 in 1991?

Go see “2016: Obama’s America”! It will be the high-water mark of this campaign.

The unrelenting force of D’Souza’s power to persuade will force everyone to re-think just who is this man we so unknowingly elected in 2008 because we got tired of George W. Bush.

P.S. As with “Schindler’s List”, popcorn and soda doesn’t go well with “2016: Obama’s America”. Oh, did I tell you that executive produce Gerald Mohlen also was the producer of Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List”?
