A man is in critical condition after being shot by Sheriff’s Department deputies in Goleta early Saturday morning. The deputies were responding to a call of gunshots in the area of Andrita and Rosemead streets near San Marcos High School, and found a man standing in a yard holding a handgun on the 4700 block of Andrita Street.

The man, according to Sheriff’s spokesperson Sergeant Mark Williams, “confronted the deputies, and that is when several shots were fired striking the suspect.” He was taken to Cottage Hospital in critical condition. The incident took place around 3 a.m.

Authorities conducted a widespread search, Williams said, to determine if there were any other suspects or victims in the case, and several people are being questioned about the circumstances surrounding the incident. A reverse 9-1-1 call went out to area residents early in the morning, advising them to stay indoors. The area has since been cleared.

Sheriff’s detectives are working to determine how many shots were fired and by whom.
