SBCC’s Express to Success Program, geared toward helping low-income and under-represented students who struggle in math and English, received a major statewide award for Best Practices in Student Equity. Launched in fall 2011 with 257 students, the program is funded at SBCC through a five-year, $3 million federal grant. Currently, 474 students are enrolled, and school officials say students completed two levels of accelerated math or English at a 30-40 percent higher rate than students taking traditional courses over a two-semester period.
