The Santa Barbara schools communications coordinator, Barbara Keyani, won a Special Publications award from her professional association for the welcome banner hanging in the entryway to every district school and the headquarters. Designed in response to a report critical of the district’s special education program, the banner is meant to make the schools more welcoming to parents and students. It includes the six most spoken languages in the district — English, Spanish, Farsi, French, Russian, Vietnamese, German, Mandarin — as well as Chumash, sign language, and Braille.
