Santa Barbara Arthritis Foundation Walk 5/18

Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. and the Walk begins at 9:30 a.m. on the beautiful Santa Barbara City College West Campus at 967 Cliff Drive. There is a one mile or three mile option – both leisurely walks through the college campus and along the beach on West Cabrillo Boulevard. Arthritis Walk® is the Arthritis Foundation’s signature fundraising and awareness event with an aim to find a cure for the nation’s leading cause of disability. Participants walk as individuals or in teams in honor of a friend or family member with arthritis. The family-friendly event features a health expo, food, beverages, prizes, a kid’s zone, entertainment, and plenty of arthritis information. Funds raised will benefit the Arthritis Foundation, Central Coast Office, which serves the San Luis Obispo-Santa Barbara-Ventura counties area.

The Walk’s Honorary Co-Chairs are Dr. William Gallivan, MD and his wife Karen Gallivan, RN. Dr. Gallivan has been practicing for over 20 years as an orthopedic surgeon in Santa Barbara. He specializes in arthritis surgery including total joint replacement, arthroscopy and sports medicine. His wife, Karen Gallivan, RN assists Dr. Gallivan in his Solvang, CA satellite office.

The Walk’s Medical Honoree is Edward McGinn, MD, who has served as a rheumatologist at Sansum Clinic and Arthritis Foundation Board Member for over 40 years. Youth Honoree is 17-year-old Christa Weston, who was diagnosed in 2010 with Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Many people don’t know that kids can get arthritis, but 300,000 children in the U.S. have the diagnosis.

KEYT- TV News Channel 3 anchor CJ Ward will serve as Master of Ceremonies and live entertainment will be provided by local folk rock band “Indian Trading Furs.” Walks around the country continue through May during National Arthritis Month in more than 250 communities to fund arthritis research, health education and government advocacy initiatives.
