Work Nearly Complete on De la Vina, Figueroa Intersection

Construction crews wrapped up most of the work on a street-narrowing project designed to take the intersection of De la Vina and Figueroa streets off the list of the most dangerous for pedestrians to cross. The construction of new sidewalk extensions is designed to offer pedestrians better sight lines for oncoming traffic and a shorter distance to cross. From 2008-2010, that intersection proved the second most dangerous for pedestrians, with five people hit, one fatally. In 2009, 68-year-old Robert Ward Keeler was struck and killed by a MTD bus turning left from Figueroa onto De la Vina Street. Construction cost $352,000, slightly more than was budgeted. Landscaping work still needs to be done and new streetlights — for better illumination — will be installed in two months.
