The blue and white flags lining State Street are flying in honor of the Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara (JFGSB) from August 30 to Sept. 6. JFGSB is one of 155 Jewish Federations of North America, which collectively raises and distributes more than $3 billion annually for social welfare, social services, educational and capital needs. Locally, the Federation is devoted to fulfilling a multitude of local needs while providing rescue and relief around the world. Services are provided through its programs which are open to all, often free of charge.

Jewish Family Service benefits those in need locally with counseling, a vibrant volunteer program, and provides an assortment of cultural, social welfare and educational programs and classes for all ages. Portraits of Survival and Upstanders are permanent exhibits that depict the journey of local survivors and refugees during the Holocaust, as well as locals who helped Jews survive the Holocaust. Educational programs for students and at-risk youth provide discussions with survivors that inspire participants to examine their responsibilities as members of our community. Art at the JCC provides high-caliber, strongly-themed exhibits for the entire community, and provides artists the opportunity to showcase their work in the community. All programs are housed at the Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center, 524 Chapala St.

The national logo on the flags contains three elements: umbrella arcs symbolizing the safety net Federations provide for local communities, as well as around the world. The flame symbolizes Jewish history and heritage, providing a sense of aspiration, hope and optimism. The menorah candelabra underneath anchors our visual identity in Jewish tradition-all in a traditional Jewish blue color.

Federation invites the community to get involved by attending classes, volunteering, or participating in upcoming events such as an Opening Reception for the SB Art Association on Sept. 8, a Young Adult Sukkot Party on Sept. 21, a Family Sukkot Party on Sept. 24, a Kristallnacht commemoration in November, and our annual fundraiser, “Super Sunday” on Nov. 17, as well as many other events and fundraisers (see www.jewishsantabarbara.org for listings, or call 805-957-1115).
