A press release issued by Governor Brown’s office today indicated that legislation will be proposed to temporarily exempt local agencies’ transit workers from the California Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA), but preserves the state’s ability to fight for the pension reform law in court.

Once the proposed legislation is passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor the U.S. Department of Labor is expected to certify federal transit grants that have been delayed for months. In the case of Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (SBMTD), these proposed actions should free up $4.6 million in federal operating assistance for the 2012-2013 budget year.
