Agriculture contributes nearly $3 billion to the county’s economy every year, according to a report heard Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors that examined the industry’s financial impacts. Other findings included a steep increase in the number of crops grown over the years — 200 now versus 50 in the 1940s — as well as a move from ranching to farming. The analysis also found that agriculture provided direct jobs for more than 14,000 people in 2011. Supervisors Salud Carbajal and Peter Adam agreed to study the issues further, with Carbajal interested in how the Affordable Care Act will affect the industry and Adam interested in more in-depth economic analysis.
