To raise enthusiasm for the many ways math is used to solve problems, like how long it takes to bicycle to Mars or at what speed a vehicle must launch from the Martian surface (both winners last year), Raytheon awards competing middle-school students $1,000 scholarships through its MathMovesU program. With points for creativity and the use of math equations through a PowerPoint presentation, students can use their winnings toward STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) camp programs or college — Raytheon also awards the students’ schools a matching amount for math-related programs. The application deadline is February 15, 2015.
