‘Candyman’ Now Facing 1,500 Years in Prison

Julio “Candyman” Diaz, the former Milpas Street doctor charged with overprescribing pills and linked to 20 overdose deaths, withdrew the guilty pleas he entered in a deal with federal prosecutors earlier this year. Diaz successfully argued to the judge that his former attorney — he has had four — didn’t adequately inform him of the consequences of his pleas. Under that deal, Diaz admitted to 11 of his 88 charges and faced up to 200 years in prison. Federal prosecutor Ann Luotto Wolf say Diaz will now head to trial in May on the 88 charges, which could land him more than 1,500 years in prison. Diaz remains in federal custody but could be released pending trial. Wolf said it “appears unlikely” the feds will offer another deal.
