UC President Janet Napolitano announced this week a minimum-wage increase for the next three years, topping out at $15 per hour on October 1, 2017. The increase applies to all direct and contract-service UC employees — including students — working more than 20 hours per week and gets its first bump this October, to $13 hour. Next year it jumps to $14 per hour.

The University of California is the state’s third largest employer — behind the federal and state governments — with some 195,000 employees at its 10 campuses, five medical centers, three national labs, the Office of the President, the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and other locations. The California state minimum is currently $9 an hour, set to increase to $10 on January 1.
