Take a Shortcut at the Airport

Though many would argue that the mission has yet to be accomplished, airports are making it easier for passengers considered low-risk to pass through the post-9/11 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) line. It takes fingerprinting, proof of citizenship, a photo ID, a visit to Santa Barbara’s airport, and $85, but TSA PreCheck verification can speed your boarding nationwide.

Travelers who enroll in TSA PreCheck can avoid fumbling with their shoes, light jacket, belt, laptop computer, and liquids (of the correct volume) while going through security. The pre-check line lets you keep your shoes on and your carry-on bag intact, and is available at 120 airports and 11 airlines.

Santa Barbara Municipal Airport administrators have scheduled a sign-up period of October 26-30 after the first one filled to capacity quickly. To pre-enroll and schedule an appointment, go to identogo.com/SBA.aspx and be sure to indicate that Santa Barbara is your location. Appointments are held at the main Santa Barbara airport terminal: 500 James Fowler Road. Walk-ins are taken when time allows.

The program available at Santa Barbara airport is for domestic flights only — and is good for five years — and the equivalent international pre-check program is only available at international airports.
