Responding to a report of a burglary alarm at Santa Barbara Motorsports early Christmas morning, Sheriff’s deputies discovered two suspects inside a fenced-off storage area near the Hollister Avenue shop, according to a Sheriff’s Office press release.

Glenn Olson

The two suspects — Glenn Wayne Olson, 46, and Jason Lee Newton, 29, both of Santa Barbara — fled separately on foot, with Olson being quickly arrested. Newton fled to a nearby commercial building and climbed onto the roof, while police officers from UCSB and CHP officers surrounded the building.

The property’s live-in caretaker heard footsteps on the roof. “He discovered a nearby storage room was now locked and the lights had been turned off,” the press release states. A K-9 unit soon discovered Newton “hiding under a shelving unit,” and he was taken into custody after resisting arrest.

The two were booked into County Jail — Newton on one outstanding warrant as well as charges including alleged burglary, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest, trespassing, and conspiracy.

Olson, who reportedly “made several unsuccessful attempts to hide narcotics inside his body” at the jail, was arrested on charges including burglary, possession of drugs for sale, possession of stolen property, destruction of evidence, resisting arrest, and three outstanding warrants, the press release said. Deputies stated Olson was carrying almost nine grams of heroin, meth, and prescription opiates packaged for sale at the time of his arrest.
