Catering to Santa Barbara’s elderly Spanish-speaking community, Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson will host a scam prevention seminar for seniors in Spanish with English translation provided. The free event takes place Thursday, February 4, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Franklin Neighborhood Center at 1136 East Montecito Street.

Co-hosted by the city and the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) — in collaboration with local nonprofits the Community Action Commission and the Latino Elder Outreach Network — the evening will feature a panel of speakers from the CSLB, the California Department of Insurance, and the California Bureau of Real Estate. Attendees will also have time ask questions and get help if they have been scammed, states Jackson’s Monday press release.

“Seniors are all too frequently the target of scams that can rob them of precious life savings,” said Jackson in the release. “With a seminar like this, I am hoping we can empower them with education and information and help our often unsuspecting seniors protect themselves.” After hosting two such seminars last year in Santa Maria and Camarillo — both drawing a large crowd — the senator intends to reach out to Santa Barbara City’s senior Spanish-speakers.
