The Santa Barbara Bowl welcomed local music mogul and UCSB alumnus Jack Johnson to its Honorary Board of Directors this month. A well-known figure in town, Johnson brings to the nonprofit years of experience in the music industry and the environmentalist community. He will serve as the board’s twelfth member.

“The Santa Barbara Bowl has always been a special place for me,” Johnson said in a written statement to the press. “The staff has always made me feel at home, so I’m honored to become part of the Bowl’s family as an honorary board member.” He’s performed 10 times at the Bowl with musicians like Ben Harper and G. Love & Special Sauce.

It’s not Johnson’s first experience working with the venue on environmental issues. His 2014 concerts focused on getting fans to reuse concert cups in an effort to reduce waste at his shows, as well as promoting “Greening the Bowl,” an effort to make the concert hall carbon neutral.

“I’ve been really inspired by all of the work that the Bowl has put into making their venue one of the greenest and most progressive venues in the nation,” said Johnson. “It’s a beautiful place to watch a show, but I’ve learned to appreciate it even more as I’ve seen how they operate behind the scene.”
