Ah.....the rumored downtown Whole Foods Market! Why not? Who thought SB could support three Trader Joes's?

Another "Santa Barbara Motel 6", which is not "the Santa Barbara Motel 6" is located on Upper State Street (and yet another on Calle Real in what is now Goleta.) I had to read down the bottom of the article to get which one was the new and improved version.

On Motel 6 Reveals Room Makeover

Old news (but good news). EdHat had it a month ago. Not to mention the Regency Centers sign has been up and construction workers feverishly working on the old Circuit City/Make-It-Work shell daily. October 9 is the tentative opening date, BTW. Although there might be an increase of traffic in the area, think about the tremendous reduction in rides across town to that place on the Mesa and perhaps the decrease in flow down De La Vina to TJ's. Or, perhaps, an overall decrease as folks in the neighborhood figure out they can walk/bike/bus to Whole Foods! Maybe, just maybe the City "planners" will get it together and finally address a comprehensive plan for the MANY upper State Street changes in the works, instead of allowing piecemeal development. 'Cause you ain't seen nothin' yet!

On Whole Foods to Open in Fall 2009

Not a day goes by that in my 1 mile "commute" to my office, either on bike or by car that I don't see some moron talking on a hand-held phone doing something (else) stupid. Like not stopping at a stop sign, blowing through a red light, even driving on the wrong side of the road.

Not a day goes by that I don't witness police officers on motorbikes or in patrol cars witnessing these violations and doing nothing.

Now with regard to the woman on the pass: by all accounts, as she was driving on violation of the law, she should be cited for that, not to mention reckless endangerment, not to mention that her insurance wont have to pay for a dime of her damages. She might get the message, but I doubt that all this dialog will do a damn thing to modify the behavior of the vast, ignorant, plugged-in, tuned-out who will continue to risk their lives and those of rest of us on the road.

On Woman Answers Cell Phone, Drives off Highway 154

Thanks, John, for great review of the AVP excitement! My 7th grader aspiring volleyball player daughter and I made it to the beach for part of the day Sunday and it really was awesome to see world-class players back on our beautiful beach. I hope to catch the action we missed on TV next weekend, but it surely wont be the same!

On Rogers/Dalhausser Stage a Comeback for the Ages

Two other issues: RED LIGHT RUNNING. That has *got* to be the most reckless action a driver can take (not counting DUI.) Moving through an intersection against a red light has the potential for disaster, both car v. car and car v. pedestrian or bicyclist. Yet at the busy Upper State Street interesection by my office (and so many others!), cars roll, sometimes speed through the red light at almost every change of the signal. Police are missing out on a big moneymaker there.

Item two: Bicyclists not obeying the rules of the road. Sure, get dressed up in those bright "I know you can see me" clothes and blow through the light/stop sign, crosswalk. I bike every day and I'll admit to breaking some of the rules---in the past. We've GOT to set a good example. Once, I was stopped by a police officer and he made the point.

The bottom line: if we all just slow down, even 5 mph, get off the phone and pay attention to the rules and other drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, everyone will safer. You might arrive at your destination a minute later, but a little less stressed and happy in the feeling that you didn't kill or injure someone on the way.
