Mexico is not the only country of origin for immigrants. They are comming from all over the world, (as they have been for centuries), and no, not all latinos fit in the same bag, just like all europeans or all asians don't fit in the same bag.

I never said anything about eliminating whites, (and by the way, white is also a culture. I don't know why culture sounds like such an alienizing concept). The "old model of american assimilation" is but a fantasy. Most immigrants didn't have the american dream-reaching experience that the Ellis Island model proposes. If it was, we wouldn't have had China towns, or segregated black, jewish, or (fill in the blank) communities. This model only worked for people who were white, specifically, northern european. Stop pretending that everybody has the same shot at success in this country.

I think nobody here so far gets the picture. These stories not only put a face and background on the millions of undocumented immigrants that we live with every day, but it also shows why the current immigration laws don't work. They promote discrimination, abuse by employers, weak family bonds, and the dehumanization of an entire group of people that is doing nothing different from what the race-making system in the U.S. has been encouraging since the begginings this nation : to guarantee a cheap, basic labor that will be the base for the wealth and supremacy of a "dominant" group.

How is one to assimilate when one must leave under the shadows because legal immigration is just not possible for this people? Besides, historically, it has been proved that assimilation is a matter of time. It takes aproximately 3 generations within a family for them to beggin assimilating, and this is precisely what undocumented immigrants have been doing for decades. The only instance in which assimilation is faster, is in the case where the immigrant is Scandinavian, English, Irish, or any other group that is likely to possess English fluency and a similar cultural background to what is to be considered "American", though if anybody asks me, Santa barbara was Mexican way before the English American came over here to wipe away the Native American, Mexican, and Spanish influence as inferior cultures and stablished it's white supremacy once again.

And no, fabricated cultural events like "Fiesta" or appropriation of Native American art or misuse of Mexican holidays are not to be considered legacies of this displaced cultures. They are merely celebrations of idealized and stereotypical images of said ethnic groups that are used as an excuse to feel more entitled to the use of this territory, as well as an excuse to get wasted for the weekend.

I have no hope for AShaw or revisionist to change their ethnocentrist opinion through my comment. I do, however, have hope for the America (this oh so diverse, beautiful America) to continue to progress towards a less economic-oriented policy and realize that we are talking about people that we shop with, live with, fight with, love with, and grow up with. I am certain it will happen, it might just take longer than we would like.

Excuse me, but Drug Dealers, and potential college students are two completely different groups of people.

So your kids didn't have the drive, extra curricular activities, or grades to get enough money to cover their college tuition and you used loans. Are you going to blame the undocumented immigrants for that as well?
