To above Volcano person: Not guilty means the jury did not find the charges to have been proved to their satisfaction. It does NOT mean everyone, or even anyone on the opposing side (our system IS an advocacy system) was a liar. To say that, especially since the clear indication is that you know nothing at all about our court system, is rude, libelous, and mean.
You are well named. You are ignorant. I suggest all the hot-heads actually learn something about this country's court system.
Discover how much Chief Sanchez and his force are doing to understand, control, and perhaps abate the gang problems. Do something. Maybe stop emoting over third and fourth person musings, and do something helpful.
Why is this so difficult for you?

I read these rages about the Santa Barbara Police Chief and his force. I can see the same people over and over shooting from the hip.
Do you know Chief Sanchez? Thought not
Do you know Detective Hunter? Thought not
Do you work with the department on felony cases, read the reports, re-investigate everything? No. Thought not.
It's my job to provide investigations about these officers; I am not a city policeman. I investigate them. I provide quality control, and I do not work for the city.
Maybe before you pop off at Chief Sanchez and Det. Hunter you come armed with some on the ground, first-hand facts. Or is that just too much to expect?
An investigator with 40 years experience doing just that.

And I don't miss? Every shooter misses. Somehow I doubt you have a CCW. If you do, I hope the issuing agency reads your remarks. Your CCW would be history if my agency had issued it.

I am a non-police investigator of two homicides by local gangs. This action is due - overdue - and shows the vital leadership at S.B.P.D. needed to address this difficult problem. We are lucky to have such well educated, intelligent and keen investigators working this on a daily basis, and that shows the progressive and hands-on leadership of the police chief, and the men and women under him, as well as the good support of city government.
Kudos.

I don't want to live with wound-up, drugged-out, bad boys, either, of any race.
I am not now, nor have I ever been a policeman in this city or any other, but I am a criminal investigator involved with investigating these homicides.
All of us would be well served if calm, clear views of this admitted problem were maintained. My experience with the S. B. P. D. has shown the gang enforcers are unusually intelligent, hard working, and effective. This is a big problem. They cannot do it alone. Nor can city government.
Gangs are family. Violence is pathological.
Do what you can to solve the growing problem, keep an eye open, cooperate with the police, and treat others with respect.
That's my suggestion.

loonpt is not a lawyer.
He or she is not even educated past the fourth grade. The second amendment is NOT a god-given right, nor is it inalienable. It's more than distressing to see comments that are so uneducated and based upon magical thinking to articles in this paper. Get an education. Make a real contribution, provide alternate responses that are at least on the same level of awareness that the article shows. loonpt are you trying to say that getting statutorily illegal and inherently dangerous weapons was the work of mindless tyranny? If so, you are suffering from your equally ignorant notion to stop taking your medications.
