From April 16-22, just in time for Earth Day, the American Automobile Association will conduct their fifth annual Great Battery Roundup. The campaign calls for Southern California residents to donate their used vehicle, motorcycle, boat, and airplane batteries to one of 39 designated recycling sites. For each battery collected, the AAA Battery Service will donate $1.50 to Surf Bus, an organization that provides marine science education and first-time beach trips to low-income children in Southern California.

Last year, the campaign rounded up almost 2,100 batteries, which amounts to 44,000 tons of lead that no longer threaten the environment. The effort allowed 300 children to get out of their neighborhoods and step on the sand for the first time.

The 2007 AAA Great Battery Roundup goal is to collect at least 1,000 batteries. To help out, drop off batteries locally at Bob Holzer Towing, 336 N, Calle Cesar Chavez, Santa Barbara, CA.
