Teaching assistants, tutors, and graders will be doing their work out in public in the first-ever “grade-in” at UCSB Tuesday, June 12.

Accompanied by members of United Auto Workers, up to 100 UC workers will be grading papers, holding office hours, and tutoring students outside UCSB’s Arbor from noon to 1:30 p.m. The workers hope to show how much work it takes to ensure quality education to UC students.

Academic Student Employees qualify as members of United Auto Workers, according to local chair representative Daraka Larimore-Hall. Currently, the UAW and University of California are negotiating a fourth contract for which academic student employees are campaigning for class size and workload protection.

According to the UAW, increased class sizes and workloads for teaching assistants, tutors, and readers directly and negatively affect the quality of education at the University of California.

The United Auto Workers is one of the largest and most diverse labor unions in the country, with members in virtually every sector of the economy. UAW Local 2865 represents over 12,000 Academic Student Employees at the nine teaching campuses of the U.C.

Similar demonstrations will be held across UC campuses on June 12.
