Get Out of Pets’ Business

Lindsey Pollard lets slip the real agenda of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) when she urges the mandatory spaying/neutering of mixed and purebred pets alike [Letters, “Sterilize the Purebreds”]. That would leave us with no pets. PETA is against the use of animals for any reason including research, food, assistance for the handicapped, and companionship. The Humane Society is of a like mind but manages to present a softer public relations image.

Voluntary spaying/neutering of pets is one of the most successful social change programs of our generation. In 30 years there has been a 90 percent reduction in shelter killing. In California more than 90 percent of owned cats and 80 percent of owned dogs are voluntarily spayed/neutered.

Mandatory spaying/neutering is unneeded, unenforceable, and unfair to responsible pet owners who choose to have their animals intact but do not allow them to run at large or produce unwanted offspring. Mandatory spaying/neutering has consistently proven to increase animal control costs, increase shelter intake, and cause normally law-abiding citizens to stop vaccinating and licensing their pets.

Don’t let the animal rights crazies from PETA push their extremist agenda in S.B. Tell these control freaks to get their noses out from between the legs of responsible citizen’s pets (who would be the only ones impacted by the law as others could care less) and focus on the serious and compelling problems we now face in our cities.
