Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects

Known best for a few radio hits (think “Fortress” and “Good to Sea”), Pinback is currently on tour and has hitched Mr. Tube & The Flying Objects along for the ride. And since no predominantly West Coast tour is complete without a stop in Los Angeles, these two highly regarded indie sensations will play The Echo Plex on October 20.

While Pinback might be simpler to recall, Mr. Tube & The Flying Objects is no less talented or regarded. Spawned in recent years as a side project of Pall Jenkins, aka Paolo Zappoli of the ever popular Black Heart Procession, their eccentric approach to rock music using horns, looping, jazz techniques, Latin concepts, and Jenkins’ distinct and impossible to compare singing style, Mr. Tube’s records and live performances are a diamond in the rough. That they seldom tour, which makes a ticket to any appearance all the more coveted.

This is all going down on Monday, October 20, around 8 p.m. at The Echo Plex in a pocket of Los Angeles best known as Echo Park. And yes, it’s roughly an hour and 15 minutes south of Santa Barbara, but as several Santa Barbara-residing indie music aficionados realize, it’s not always possible to catch these bands on their way up or down the coast. Sometimes we have to go to them, and Los Angeles is a bit closer than the show these two are performing at Bimbo’s Lounge in San Francisco on Sunday, October 19.
