Come hang out at Campus Point on Sunday, November 16, and raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at the same time. The Santa Barbara chapter of Delta Delta Delta sorority will be hosting an all-ages surf competition during its fifth annual Surf, Sand, and St. Jude’s Beach Day. The contest is being cosponsored by Surf Happens and the Deckers Outdoor Corporation through funding from UCSB’s student government association.

If your surfing skills are a little rusty – or nonexistent – there are plenty of alternatives to keep you busy while still supporting the cause. You can sign up for an hour lesson with Surf Happens or participate in the paddle race, dodge ball tournament, and Indo Board contest. For those who prefer to show off their artistic side, there will also be a sand castle building competition. As an entrant in any of these events you will have a chance to win prizes and trophies donated by participating sponsors Deep, Pacific Beverage, Quiksilver, Roxy, Surf One, and Wahoo’s Fish Tacos.

Kelly Johnson, Tri Delt’s philanthropy chair, expressed her excitement for the event. “It’s great because it’s a lot of fun and makes a positive connection between the campus and the community,” she said. Johnson also mentioned that they expect participation to be double that of last year’s event, due in part to the increased publicity the event has received this year.

Members of Tri Delt have already raised $21,000 for this event through a letter-writing campaign, and, during the sorority’s nearly 10-year partnership with St. Jude’s, they have raised more than $2.8 million. Your participation this year can help them break fundraising records, so get out there and have fun.

Early registration is encouraged, and entry forms can be downloaded from surfhappens.com or found at local surf shops.

The surfing competition will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Campus Point, and pending open spaces, entrants can register the morning of the event, beginning at 7:30. The other activities will begin at 10 a.m. The entry fee for the surf contest and cost for a surf lesson is $35, and the sand castle contest costs $10 per team with all proceeds going to St. Jude’s cancer and catastrophic disease research and treatment efforts. Each participant who registers will also receive freebies like a T-shirt, food from Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, and a raffle ticket with a chance to win a wide variety of prizes.
