Kidnapping Plot Ends in Los Alamos

CHP officers are being credited with foiling a kidnapping plot that began in San Francisco on Sunday, February 22, and ended in Los Alamos on Tuesday, February 24.

Around 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday, CHP officers approached a car parked on Alisos Canyon Road, off Highway 101, and found a man tied up in the back of a car. The CHP officers alerted sheriff’s detectives to the situation. A subsequent investigation indicated that the man had been abducted in Los Angeles on Sunday by the car’s two other occupants, 33-year-old Daniel Caius Stevens and 30-year-old Krista Yee Carlsson. According to an account of the incident from Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Drew Sugars, Stevens and Carlsson allegedly traveled from San Francisco to Los Angeles to collect a drug debt from a 27-year-old Los Angeles man. Once there, they successfully overpowered him, tied him up, and put him in the back seat of their car.

Sugars said the pair drove their victim around Los Angeles over the next 24 hours in an effort to collect money from his acquaintances but eventually decided to return to San Francisco with him still in tow. They had stopped on Alisos Canyon Road to rest.

Stevens and Carlsson were arrested on charges of felony kidnapping and extortion, which Sugars said could earn them life sentences. They are being held on $1 million bail. The victim was briefly hospitalized for injuries sustained during his abduction. His name was not released.
